VMware Capacity Planner

VMware Virtual Infrastructure

Capacity Planner

Measure twice, cut once, ensuring that the Virtual Infrastructure designed for your business will meet your needs and exceed your expectations.

The VMware Capacity Planner Service is a short project that provides us with the ability to "measure twice and cut once" ensuring that the Virtual Infrastructure designed for your business will meet your needs and exceed your expectations. As a VMware Enterprise Partner who is both certified and experienced with VMware Capacity Planner, our Professional Services team will design the foundation on which your Virtual Infrastructure will be built.

Our Capacity Planner Service is based on the hosted Capacity Planner application from VMware which we utilize to perform a hardware performance audit of your servers which will provide us with exact measurements of your physical servers' capabilities as well as their current workload.

On average, clients who implement the VMware Virtual Infrastructure will receive an ROI within 6 to 9 months. And make sure to ask us how you might qualify for a Capacity Planner 50% credit on your VMware implementation.

Capacity Planner Deliverables

The deliverables of this project will include a current workload audit, total physical capacity audit and both a conservative and aggressive virtualization plan based on these measurements. This audit will provide your business with the information needed to make an educated decision on your virtualization road map, including details on which windows servers are candidates to become virtual guests, which storage hardware are candidates for supporting a virtual infrastructure as well as which physical servers are capable of becoming VMware ESX host servers.

Infrastructure Assessment

The GTel Professional Services Team will use the VMware Capacity Planner to analyze, plan and provide decision making information to direct the key phases for the Infrastructure Assessment project, as described below:

• Assess – the current state of an infrastructure’s workload capacity through comprehensive discovery and inventory of IT assets. Measure server loads and capacity utilization across various elements of the IT infrastructure — by function, location and environment.

• Plan – for capacity optimization through detailed utilization analysis, benchmarking, trending and identification of capacity optimization alternatives. Identify resources and establish plan for virtualization, hardware purchase or redeployment.

• Decide – on the optimal solution by evaluating various alternatives through scenario modeling and “what-if” analyses. Determine which alternative best meets the pre-defined criteria.

• Monitor – resource utilization through anomaly detection and alerts based on benchmarked thresholds. Generate recommendations to ensure ongoing capacity optimization.

CAPACITY PLANNER ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES

• Qualify a standard virtualization solution and present an initial assessment of how well a standard virtualization solution would fit your needs, given specific requirements and limitations.

• Outline a plan for you to move forward with a virtualization solution.

• Present our methodology for sampling your server inventory and utilization statistics, how virtualization can be strategic to you, and how many VMware ESX Server hosts we anticipate will be needed to accommodate your current and future workloads.

• Server Inventory Analysis - Statistics observed from the sampled set of Customer's servers

• Virtualization - Server virtualization use cases and virtualization methodology

• Server Consolidation Assessment - Anticipated server consolidation ratios to consolidate existing workloads
